NSSA Projects
Over the past eighteen years, the N.S.S.A. has undertaken a wide variety of projects in its efforts to ensure the protection of the North Shore cold water fisheries and to educate the public about the need to conserve and protect those resources for the enjoyment of future generations.
Protect Our Streams
Backgrounder:
As early as 2000 the North Shore Steelhead Association was looking for a means of educating landowners who owned property bordering on local streams or rivers. The goal was to promote awareness of the importance to the fishery of maintaining good water quality. In 2004 the North Shore Steelhead agreed to sit on an advisory group, chaired by EcoSuperior that was looking at ways to educate the general public regarding the importance of looking after the streams and rivers in our community. This advisory group participates on what is now known as the “Watercourse Stewardship Project”. The advisory group is comprised of the following paricipants:
Ministry of Natural Resources- Upper Great Lakes Management Unit, North Shore Steelhead Association, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, City of Thunder Bay, Thunder Bay Field Naturalists, and Lake Superior Binational Program.
Ongoing efforts:
Two programs have been developed aimed at protecing and restoring stream ecosystems.
Protect Our Streams provides information on proper management of streams
Study Our Streams is a monitoring program to assess stream health. The Study Our Streams program helps citizens get involved in protecting our local waterways.
Youth educational approach:
As part of the ongoing programs an educational component which would involve youth (and indirectly their parents), was developed by Eco Superior that would be offered to educators.
The Stream Habitat Curriculum package is designed to inspire interest in stream habitats, ecosystems and ultimately stream protection. It is also designed to tie into the existing Life Systems: Interactions within Ecosystems curriculum for grades 4-7’s in Ontario. Part of the program includes the use of aquatic" trading cards" which are designed to be educational and create interest in the aquatic composition of a healthy stream.
